NOW? The British empire no longer exists! What are you talking about? It has not existed for a looong time. The Commonwealth perhaps and even that is a shadow of the old empire.

The only Empire upon which the sun never set was the British Empire, as it’s the only one ever which was world encircling so at any point in the day , there was always a place with the sun in the sky above . None of the others mentioned were so far flung

Not confusing at all if you are British. I is up there with when you can drink a gin and tonic. When the sun has passed over the yardarm (part of a sailing). “Somewhere in the British Empire the sun has passed over the yardarm” you can drink gin and tonic at any time of day
