times new Roman is a typeface, not a font, that came into being in the twentieth century. It has an ancestry with Baskerville, Bodoni and others. Don't confuse typeface with font. The letter shapes , over thousands of years, developed into the letters we use in English now. z, y, j, X were not classical Latin letters. the distinction between upper case and lower case was early mediaeval. The Romans used upper case in stone, lower case on paper.
