Penny, as it says in the details, it was already scarred by fire and it didn’t harm the tree although it would probably still be standing if the hole hadn’t been made bigger but we’ll never know.

Dani, You misunderstood the timeline. The explanation stated that the Scribner brothers were paid $75 in 1881 to enlarge an existing fire scar. So, $75 in 1881 was worth $2,106 in 2021.
