I am not sure this is correct. I have previously read that Lucas sold the rights to the Star Wars franchise for movie making but retained the merchandising rights.

That is an amazing amount of money. George Lucas made amazing movies . Personally I think the star wars produced by Disney are not as good as those by George Lucas.
