I use to hitchhike my way to high school in Manhattan Beach, CA 1976-79. it was the only scenario where I felt comfortable doing it, typically the parent of a classmate would pick me up on their way to work.

We had a spate of young hitchhikers murdered, we decided to make it illegal. Think it saved a lot of lives.
