My dad has a Japanese cherry tree in his back yard. Plus apple and pear trees, a grape with wild grapes, a big garden with strawberries and watermelons. The term sakura on its own is ambiguous, and could be used to mean either the tree or the blossom. There is also the word sakuragi meaning cherry tree. The addition of ki, “tree” makes this distinction clear. (ki changes to gi as an instance of rendaku)
