How many red and white stripes are on the United States flag?

Notice the division between Americans in the comments. what we do agree on mostly is that we love our country and we are angry that our leaders have abandoned the ideals that made us who we are.

Learned the true meaning of the red & white stripes in elementry school, 1960. Red was for the blood spilled by the brave who fought for America. White was for our national trust in Almighty God. We've sure fallen away from what we once were. MAGA!

Player 4243217, in case you didn't know, there is a grass roots effort to get people to wear red on Fridays. RED stands for Remember Everyone Deployed. I am a Marine veteran, who served in Spain in the 80s. They didn't allow women in combat, then. My job was in behind-the-scenes Intelligence collection. I was only in Spain for a year, but it was tough being so far from home. I got the chance to meet several of the Marines who were in Beirut when the barracks was bombed. One of them gave me the right shoulder flag patch that he wore there - something I still have and treasure more than 35 years later.

I thought the stripes were for the thirteen original colonies which became states.

AwesomeAnnie7, the stripes stand for exactly what it states bravery and valor and purity. People tried to change it a bit after WWII and during the cold war but it's not official. Similarly to the pledge being changed in the mid 1950s to add the "under God" part, it wasn't in the original.
