So the printing press reduced the diversity of the English language so much that that the @ ‘et’ character persisted until the 17th century some 200 years after it was introduced.

There was also a letter for the t-h combination, which looked similar to a Y. That's why when someone want to look old style they mistakenly write "ye olde tattoo parlor" (or whatever). It was always "the", but that was spelled differently.
