The English sending warships was not an act of aggression. In the early 1600s the Dutch controlled the valuable trade of Nutmeg from the East Indies apart from one small British island called Rum. The Dutch invaded the island and killed the British settlers and New Amsterdam was taken in retaliation. The matter went to international arbitration and it was decided the Dutch kept Rum and the British kept New Amsterdam. Unknown to the Dutch, the British had already transported their nutmeg trees to India. This effectively meant the Dutch had swapped New York for a tiny worthless island.
