My daughter nearly ended up in hospital because of the smell of them in her flat. Doctors didn't know what was making her so sick.

When I was a child, my mother sprinkled naphthalene flakes around the Christmas tree to resemble snow. To this day, I love the smell of naphthalene.

I used mothballs when teaching chemistry. They dissolve in fingernail polish remover but not water. That is due to the rule that non polar molecules dissolve non polar molecules but polar molecules will not dissolve most non polar molecules. Polar dissolves polar molecules.
