Roughly 2/3 of tide generating forces come from the moon, and 1/3 come from the sun. When the moon and sun align, these forces add together causing spring tides. When the moon and sun are out of phase, the forces partly cancel, giving neap tides.

BrainTek , pretty much all beyond me ! But I was under the impression the 'tides' or water level didnt change at all ... it was the earths rotation that caused the in/out effect ?

without the moon we'd have no tides.. if the moon was closer the tides would be stronger, if it moved farther they'd be weaker

Actually the correct answer here is the “Sun” because eventually it’s the sun that “pulls” the moon which affects the water, anyways, I did answer the “moon” because it’s a bit more of astronomy here
