SkyEagle, Yes, seriously. In earlier times ( eg Renaissance) a Cartoon was not a humorous or animated figure meant for entertainment. It was a life size preliminary drawing for a major work which, if satisfactory, could later be transferred to canvas for the artist and their assistants to complete. I remember as a child in (I think) the V &A Museum, seeing a sign pointing to the Raphael Cartoons, and. being very disappointed at what I saw! They are magnificent, worked in full colour and the basis of the tapestries made for the Sistine Chapel. But they weren't a child's idea of cartoons!
