When and where were gingerbread houses originally invented?

I love building gingerbread houses with my kids. We made a whole village this year!

It seems that all Christmas traditions started in Germany.

Called Lebkuchenhaus in German.

My husband has a favorite Christmas movie out of all the chick flick ones I "make" him watch. Every year, we watch Snow Bride (with Patricia Richardson). I know the dialogue by heart. The question came up and my mind played the scene where our hero is telling the young lady about the history of Gingerbread houses!
