actually Norman Lear didn't create this and many other 70s sitcoms credited to him. he produced them and took creative rights after making small changes to the original work of a black writer whom he fired layer. this information is included in a widely available documentary about 70s film and tv. good times, that's my mama and the Jefferson's are some of these sitcoms.

lisarav, while I imagine such things did happen in the 70s (this happens to many unknown artists, btw), Sanford and Son isn't one of them. But Lear didn't create it either. It was adapted from the BBC series "Steptoe and Son." Foxx created the character, of course, an icon of television comedy. He would've been remembered as the "King of the party record"--but instead is adored around the country and the world as television's greatest comic curmudgeon! Nobody cares who created the show.

KookyOrangutan5005, Show was probably Lear's idea & he had good sense to let Foxx "run with it" regarding the character of Fred.
