What is Stachybotrys?
Correct answer: Toxic Fungus Mold
Paul Haidet
This type of mold was featured on a heartbreaking episode of Forensic Files, in which a family’s house had to be destroyed due to the overwhelming amount of mold; the family members even became gravely ill.

I hired a Mold Remediation company and paid to have them remove the mold. All of my porous belongings were contaminated. I lost all of my books and had to have my furniture remediated as well.
I ended up having to sue the apartment complex. I hired a Mold expert whom was licensed in NJ, NY and DE. NJ had no laws against mold like New York. The expert and my lawyer used the case in NY to win my case. I was awarded damages plus punitive. However, I have 30% permanent lung damage and my girlfriend has a higher percentage. We were both tested and treated by a pulmonologist and continue to get yearly treatment.
Mold exposure is akin to asbestos exposure, but the laws against mold remain archaic, akin to the way asbestos was looked at in the 50's. There are hundreds of types of mold that are toxic. Stachybotrous Chartum is the worst. Nothing to trivialize.

A family of four in New York moved into a house. They had the movers place all of their boxed belongings deposited in the basement. A few weeks after moving in, they had all succumbed to it and died. Apparently, the former owner had sprayed bleach on it and then painted over it with Kilz. The bleach only killed the surface mold and the Kilz didn't isolate it. The mold had grown and proliferated behind the drywall in the finished basement. The courts ruled that the owner was at fault for not reporting this before selling the property. In NY, there had been a newly enacted law to enforce mold abatement.

The full name of the mold is Stachybotrous Chartum. It is toxic and deadly. Prolonged exposure to it can cause Pulmonary embolisms and death.

Phiend99, I’m also suffering from mold toxicity in NYC - can’t find a lawyer - who represented you so successfully?

“The genus was erected” doesn’t make any sense.

I thought I'd take the advice of several people who say the longest option is the correct answer. Since I didn't know the answer, that's what I guessed. Well, I got it wrong!

palitja, Oil of cloves diluted in water and sprayed over the mould is highly effective also. 👍

Guitarfan 5, no it's not there's case law in Australia, also my landlord who has a double property, he painted over mould in the bathroom of the other house, rented it out to a single mother with a couple of children, the youngest had lung problems, when she realized what he did, she moved out as soon as she could..

Just finding stuff in my garden. General public hardly thinks of moulds and fungus to their detriment.

My personal experience with this mold is when I rented an apartment. I found that the roof was leaking in the HVAC room, which was outside next to the balcony. I reported it to the Management Office and they didn't do anything about it. I dismissed it because it wasn't my property.
After living there for a little over a year, I discovered black mold throughout the HVAC room. My girlfriend had been experiencing allergies and we were looking for a source. I had just re-signed a lease for another year. Management denied any culpability, refused to do anything about the mold and was holding me to the lease terms, even if I moved out.

Paul Haidet, Anywhere there is humidity, the right amount of heat and moisture...You have mold. I've renovated 3-4 dozens homes in

Where it's visible you can get rid of it with bleach water. In my case it was in the walls, underneath the carpets and so forth.
Fortunately, my homeowner's insurance took care of everything and that house was in the desert, near Moab

It's the same toxic black mold we're warned about. I had trouble with it in the first house I owned after a bizarre flood soaked 3 floors of the house.
I'd come home to find it raining INSIDE my house because my toilet tank had cracked which caused a constant stream of water to shoot out from the tank pool in the bathroom and soak through the floor. Directly below, it fell from the ceiling and saturated my living room carpet and floor, finally filling my finished basement with water to my knees.
