This might sound a bit blunt (from not knowing the exact details) but if he REALLY wanted to stop he should have just walked into the nearest police station/mental asylum!!

Maybe he did it, maybe not. I think after 6 days of torture I’d probably confess too, just to stop it all and get some rest. Did the burglaries and murders stop when he was arrested? Someone else made a good point, if he wanted to get caught, why not just walk into a police station or get help from someone?
