Let's clear up the confusion: Our founding fathers had Christian values and our founding documents do mention God. But "God" is common to a number of religions besides Christianity. And the Constitution clearly states that the government may not establish ANY official religion.

This is incorrect. Our actual motto is "E Pluribis Unum": out of many, one. "In god we trust" was added in the 1950s out of the fear of communism. Same reason "under god" was added to the Pledge. America is not a Christian nation, however. Nor was it ever meant to be.

Player #92723922, Ben Franklin and many of our Founders were Deists, not specifically Christian. We should respect all beliefs and uphold the rights of those who are atheist or agnostic.

Player #127846311, God, the Bible, etc. are not in the Constitution. This is not a Christian nation, much as you may wish it. I think perhaps you need to actually READ both documents. The Declaration mentions "Divine Providence" not God. The 1st Amendment mentions religion only to forbid the gov establishing one.

YSL, The US forefathers founded the United States - among other things - based on judeo-christian principles. Separation of church and state is not mentioned in the Declaration of Independence or in the US Constitution. That idea comes from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802.

I remember we added this in the 1950s as we found ourselves fighting to the death in a Cold War against the atheist communist Soviet Union.

YSL, We have separation of Church and State. Far from trying to institute a State religion (which is what the First Amendment addresses), half of today's government is trying to wipe out religion, with Christianity being in their cross hairs currently.
