Fun fact, the royal family thought “emperor” had a bad connotation, so they kept calling themselves kings and queens, even though they ruled over what they themselves officially called an empire.
Meanwhile both the Romans and the French encountered a point at which they found the word “king” to have a negative connotation and therefore called their leader an emperor.
What’s the difference? Don’t ask me, the water’s been muddled just a teetsy little bit.
And let’s not let the Germans get away with having what’s closer to an elected president that they called an emperor. I genuinely don’t know anymore.
