Here in Australia, a sloppy joe is a loose, baggy jumper (sweater). The term was certainly in use when I was a child in the 1950s. I’ve never heard of it being a sandwich.

This sandwich is a USA thing..

When we were kids in the 60's and asked mom what was for dinner, when her reply was "sloppy Joe's", I would always reply "sloppy Joe's are neat"!

It's also an old name for a tee-shirt in the UK.

ROSEBUD

MrT2, And that name was what the pick up girls called the GIs. They knew little English, but they knew, "Hello, Joe"! I dare say it could get sloppy when the GIs had to get meds to clear up infections. The military actually put salt peter, an ingredient used in gun powder, in the coffee because it helped keep the guys from getting the "urge" as much.

Wozza
Marty, yes ; called that in NZ too ; never heard of the sandwich story 🤷♂️

MrT2
Tone,
When I was a kid just after WW2 a sloppy joe was a T shirt as introduced by the American service men . They were called Joe and off duty they wore loose T shirts hence the name sloppy joe
