What type of food is a lychee?

My mother used to talk about the Chinese restaurants in New York city giving diners a small sack of lychee at the end of the meal. They stopped when Japan invaded China and getting products from Asia became increasingly difficult during WWII.

I have only eaten lychee once . It was in restaurant in Berlin. It was served in a shot of doppelkorn which is a double strength alcohol. Can’t remember what the lychee tasted like , but I remember my throat burning like a furnace!
