What year did Hawaii become a state?
Correct answer: 1959

Tiggsmeister 43, not true. Most people in Hawaii want to remain a state. There is a significant portion of people with some native Hawaiian heritage that believe Hawaii should be a sovereign nation, but that's less than 20% of the overall population. It's true that the way the US annexed Hawaii was shady and probably illegal, but that was in 1890s and way too much has happened to reverse that now. Most people are proud to be part of USA and understand that if it wasn't the US, it would have been Japan.

808stevan1,
I want to go there some day. I understand it is absolutely beautiful. Is it very expensive compared to the average cost of things like food and housing on the mainland?

JCD, Hawaii has two senators and two Representatives in Congress.

I am perplexed that some places like Puerto Rico, etc. do NOT become part of the USA. They vote & pay taxes, etc.

Tina
Anny Babes, Lucky you!! Maui is our favorite Hawaiian island to visit.

UnhingedCaptain356, cost of living is very high but it's also a fantastic place to live, especially if you like getting outside and living in a more diverse, Asian influenced culture than most of the rest of the US
