VX was developed at Porton Down in England during the early 1950s and, apparently,was based on research done by Gerhard Schrader, a chemist working for IG Farben in Germany during the 1930s.

The original nerve agent (Sarin) was developed in Russia as a pesticide, but was so dangerous to humans that it was never used. Unfortunately they published the development which Nazi Germany then made into a weapon, however they never used it as they believed that the USSR also had it as weapon, which they did not.
