I spent many years working with horses. They also do the same thing by licking soil. I have always believed it was because they lacked nutrients in their diet. We always provided a salt lick in their stable over the winter time.

Geophagus is a genus of freshwater fish of the cichlid family. They don't actually eat earth, but they take mouthfuls of gravel and spit it out, in order to produce a "nest" to lay their eggs in. After laying the eggs both the male and female guard the nest from predation. They also guard their babies. I've bred various cichlids and they're absolutely fascinating.
