What is in the details, according to the famous saying?

I disagree with those that are saying that the phrase "The proof is in the pudding" means the same thing

I've only heard it as the devil is in the detail ie singular - I've always taken it to mean something that appears to be good at first sight but has flaws or difficulties on closer inspection.

It's probably not a good idea to try to explain one proverb by throwing another one out there. ;)

What the expression means is that, for example, lots of people have broad stroke ideas about solving the problems in the Middle East. Just do A, B, and C. It sounds good to uninformed ears, but quickly fails due to all the unanticipated problems and considerations no one foresaw at the beginning. We can all agree that something needs to be done, but the Devil is in the details.

As a professional scientist that phrase comes up often.
