Where was that American hero, Sergeant Bilko, originally based?

When I watched the show as a kid, I had no idea what a "motor pool" was. In fact, now that I know, thinking back, I don't remember ever seeing a mechanic, garage, etc. Show always took place in the barracks. Anyone remember Pvt. Doberman? Maurice Gosfield? Whatever happened to him?
