my hearing of this story is:
the rainbow serpent slithered around the place creating rivers, hence the similar shape between a winding river and a snake track .
A gready toad drank all the water, but his belly was pierced and the water flowed in the rivers again.
This is from the north, there is a dry season and monsoonal wet season.

whoever voted for New Zealand has obviously never been there. there are no snakes at all there and it's illegal to import one
