tried to learn crochet and knitting. Never could get even stitches.

I could only knit 1 or 2 lines when my family tried to teach me as a kiddo but I got rug hooking right away.. rug hooking is creating that knot with a tool. would be fun to try macrame

Tatting would have been another correct answer. It involves making small knots that are very much like macrame, but only one type of knot.
