I like that the answer pointed out that the main strategy is to stop the opponent from scoring. I played on the first "club team" in Manhattan Beach, CA, back in 1972 and was asked to switch from playing midfield or forward, to defense. My coach explained that we had the talent to score 5-6 per match, "but you win with defense". He certainly was right, we beat established teams and won the league that very first season.
