Why is it called "horse back" riding? Isn't the "back" implied? Can you do "horse front" or "horse side" riding? These are the important questions. Ha ha ha.

Quizard, I take it that you are not a horse rider. A stirrup is normally made of metal and does not have a leather cover. I believe " western" stirrups are a bit different, but nothing like a crupper.

A Crupper probably more commonly seen in Trotting horses where it is part of the harness placed under the top of the horses tail that assists in firmly attaching the cart or 'sulky' that the horse pulls in a race. I believe 'horseBACK' riding is only an American term, we 'downunder' in NZ & Aus like most places are aware you ride on the horses back, even if riding side saddle!
