LaBelle86, yes it does. I have also been there many. any years ago. Then I stood in awe on the battlefield site, I sense the massive carnage at that field. Today I question why the field was not declared a National cementary of those who died there. They were after all American Soldiers who died. I am a military brat ,wife, and now widow, even if the field had 2 stone etch with union losses the other with Confrederate losses and a plack brothers in Arms who gave their all to defend what they deemed a worthy cause on this battle field.

The town of Gettysburg has a very eerie, yet reverent, feeling to it. Seeing the multitude of unmarked graves will be an image I will remember forever.

MetallicEnsign27753, part of the battlefield indeed WAS declared a national cemetery. It was during the dedication of that cemetery that Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address. If by "field" you mean the area where Pickett's Charge occurred, it has been preserved for posterity, and with many monuments for those who were involved.

UnderwaterSailor2884, Normandy France where the DDay landings took place is in the Western Hemisphere. 195,000 Allied troops plus Germans fought it out. Gettysberg may well be the largest in the USA (though some believe it to be Fredricsberg) but neither is larger than the DDay assault

I'm not sure tenochticlan should appear as answer since the 3 months siege was reported to have involved half a million people. While it's true the entire population had to fight or flee the lake, reported numbers are pretty sketchy and would dwarf Gettysburg.

The Confederates had as much right to declare independence from the USA as the original 13 colonies from Britain. Like the northern states in the 1860s, England in the 1770s didn’t permit slavery (e.g. Somerset v Stewart (1772). American colonists were aware that people in the mother country were turning against slavery in the colonies.
