What was the name of the first king who unified Egypt?

An interesting note about Narmer and Egypt: by the time he became Pharaoh of all Egypt and Egyptian history, both the hieroglyphs system and the symbolic imagery of the pharaoh was already established. They would be used throughout their history with little change given the some 2,500 years until the Roman conquest.

That should read, "Egyptian history began."
