famously quoted "If I'd of known that's what it takes I'd have put on an eyepatch a long time ago" sic

CAGranny
Cool Cat Lady, He was no draft dodger. He did not apply to any of the Academies, but he did try to register. The services would not take him (not even John Ford's special unit), because (1) he had a hearing problem and (2) he was a maaried man with a large family. So he tried to make it up by doing many war movies.

One movie JW did that doesn't get talked about much but was funny was Donovan's Reef with Lee Marvin and Jack Warden.

Wayne died in 1979, my son born a month later and to this day, his nickname is "The Duke".

:(Nancy E):
My brother died of cancer in San Diego, California in the 1970’s. He was treated at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla. They had a John Wayne cancer center there. My brother got to meet John Wayne and it was nice to be treated like someone cared about the ordeal our family went through. Medicine has sure changed since those days in the treatment of cancer.

true grit is another example of a movie that did not need to be remade. the Dukes version was just fine

gamehappy0728, Wish I could upvote your answer more than once. The Quiet Man was and is our family's favorite John Wayne movie! Second is True Grit.

Cool Cat Lady
Player #5575613, Nope....get your facts straight. A draft dodger does not apply to the military. He applied for the Naval Academy but was rejected.

WaldoLydeker, when he died in 1979, my mother who was a Huge Fan of his, planned a Huge block party for All the kids who lived near us. This included a marathon of All his movies, popcorn, Coke, candy, ice cream, etc. Then we had a parade and we All got on our bikes and rode around the neighborhood with streamers on our bikes, balloons, etc All in "The Duke's" honor. We all got dressed up like cowgirls, cowboys, and Indians. We had sooo much Fun that day, I can tell u. They even did a write in the newspaper abt us!!

Andi
Player buddybear, u know what I think? I think they run out of New, fresh ideas in Hollywood sometimes, so That's when they do a remake! Not when it needs to be redone.

Andi
CAGranny, how Nice and noble of him!! I didn't know that!!

When I worked at “Fashion Island” in Newport Beach we saw him often. There was a pub there he liked. He was a sweet man if you said hello he said it back to you.
