Jackie, copper was the first element discovered as it is most likely to be found in elemental form and easiest to remove from its ore. It is also a lot more prevalent than gold or silver. It requires a higher temperature to remove iron from its ore and iron is rarely found in its elemental form. It also requires carbon to assist in removing it from oxygen. Once they discovered that iron was harder than bronze and thus more useful as a sword or shield, that ushered in the Iron Age.
