Birdiemom, I took a couple of Eng. Lit. Classes on Shakespeare many moons ago. What helped me immensely was digesting the prologue before undertaking one of his works

GordonPasha, Are there detailed detailed descriptions of specific buildings or landscapes in the plays ? No . The very point you make is how he could write these plays . His audience also did not travel . So if Shakespeare called his play the Merchant of Venice his audience understood the action takes place in Venice . He doesn’t describe the Doges Palace or the Ponte Vecchio because he doesn’t need to . The same with The Merry Wives of Windsor . Many of his audience at the Globe Theatre in East London would not even have traveled that far. And he would have read or heard travellers tales .
