In the US TV series 'Breaking Bad', what subject did the main character teach?

The series was rejected by a couple companies before AMC "took a chance" with the subject matter of the show. I really enjoyed the series during it's run. I found out about the rejection when I saw a special about it.

I thought Breaking Bad was an excellent, exciting program. I only knew Bryan Cranston from "Malcolm in the Middle," and I had no idea that he could act. He was totally brilliant as Walter White.

Our son encouraged us to watch it during a time I was not working after surgery. We would binge watch and we loved it.
