GeekThePeople, considering that keats was not a victorian writer, oscarwilde was a playwrite, not a novelist. charles dickens is more widely read than lewis carroll. This question makes a lot of sense even if it is subjecctive.

Dickens grew til ten with his middle class parents. Then he had to stop school and went to work due to death of a parent. He knew poverty then, but worked hard 10 hours a day pasting labels on shoe polish bottles. When old enough, he got a job writing about the happenings in government. He had a passion for writing and telling the plight of the poor.

As well they should. Dickens created some of the most memorable characters in the literary world. His works have been adapted for the large and small screen many times. One of my favorite musicals is Oliver!

His novels are as close to perfect as an author can get. I know people didn’t really like the original ending of Great Expectations. I thought it fit the characters (especially Pip) better than the rewritten ending. People want a happy ending all the time, but that’s not how life works.

I read A Tale of Two Cities at least once a year for the past 30 years. Still as beautiful as the first time I read it. Still cry when Sydney Carton goes to the guillotine for his beloved Lucie’s sake.

Trivia: He wrote what he considered his "Christmas" trilogy. "A Christmas Carol," "the Chimes," and "Cricket on the Hearth." The latter was the inspiration for Walt Disney's Jiminy Cricket...

I use to live in Hamilton (VICTORIA). Charles's son immigrated to Australia & moved there with his wife & children. Charles's daughter in-law is buried in the Hamilton Cemetery (she died in a carriage accident).

The 1984 film 'A Christmas Carol' was filmed in and around my home town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire. I used to go and watch them filming after school. The production team left Ebenezer Scrooges gravestone in St Chad's church cemetery as a thank you to the townsfolk, which I've visited a few times myself.... google it!!
