What company had a major financial scandal in 2001?
Correct answer: Enron

Montana Lady
You guys are getting US questions because you are playing the US version of the game, you can switch to a different country in settings... you can also submit questions there about your own country if you wish.
(I certainly don't mind learning more about the world, isn't that the point?)

Kaida
Who else here's old enough to have watched this scandal (and understood it)?

Englebert Humperdink
This quiz is a little USA heavy. Nothing wrong with that but some of the questions you'd only know the answer if you lived there.

Diane Peacock
As a Houston resident, I remember this well. The Astros played in Enron Stadium but they quickly changed the name. It is now Minute Maid Field.

Nutshell
Tammy, you don't have to play the US version, you can change your country in the settings. I don't know if the questions will be different, but you might have a better chance at ranking higher in the competition in your native country.

ATxpos
The best lesson to learn at this point is diversification. Never ever "put all your eggs in one basket". When you do, you are just gambling, and you might as well. Stocks (across all sectors), bonds, real estate, etc.) takes some study and a good planner. There are many good, honest people out there who build good companies, but you have to do your research. And if something sounds too good to be true....you know it's probably not a very wise move. Start early (now) with Dollar Cost Averaging and slow, steady growth!

DryHotshot80177, My parents lost nearly all of their retirement to them as well. I'm so sorry your parents suffered such loss at their hands as well. It breaks my heart.

The gas company I worked for, Dynegy, almost merged with them, but pulled out before finalization. Glad they didn't!

I bet they are still living the high life too

Cora
one of the many system failures of our country... it is truly heartbreaking to know this is the world we are raising our kids in....

As a man in my my late 60s I am really disappointed with a lot of people’s comments about our country. Yes, our country is in bad shape but now we have a president who is not scared to make the big sacrifices for us. A lot of people don’t see it but if you don’t make sacrifices, you can’t make the country great again. Yes they make big jokes about it on this Jimmy Kimmel live and they make big jokes about the president, but the thing that I’ve learned already is that you have to live on a budget and a tight budget if you expect to make it, but you must turn your life over to Jesus and allow him to guide you and direct you and whatever you do

Montana Lady, I did not know that!!

Montana Lady, I knew who the company was, but I didn’t know the details.

Kaida, I wasn't old enough to watch it but I want to know more about it

Nuna
I got this in record time, I am this old!!! lol

Nana
Kaida, And lived it! Great Company. Great People. A few bad apples brought it all down. I spent 17 1/2 years there, 6 of it post bankruptcy. Even then, you couldn’t find better people and a better company to work for.

Jubaal
NomadicFly, I live in NYC. I did NOT know that… TBH on 9/11/01 we had more “pressing” issues pertaining to that despicable tragedy.
I’ve always wondered to what extent our government was complicit. Knowing about this now… curiouser and curiouser!

marimargo
Unfortunately, many of our politicians are as dishonest as Enron, et al. Sad to say they make the laws and seem to get away with their dishonesty.
When exposed it seems those who expose them are just as guilty but haven't been caught yet. A sorry state of affairs for those of us who try to live a moral life.

marimargo
Kaida, I remember it very well.

Montana Lady, I read your story on the Route 66 question about your dad losing his belongings and being recovered after 25 yrs.
That was awesome!!!

Yani
Kaida, Me, for one. I don't believe that only Americans ever had stock on Enron. It had investors from over the world.

Yani
Can you imagine if all the companies over the world who commit a lot of fraud and other crimes were exposed and prosecuted? Very very few are ever fully exposed and almost none are ever punished to the extent they should be.

This question is 23 years old, Good to know.

Keira, Excuse me, but all children of American citizens have a RIGHT to free public education. Thank Abraham Lincoln.

Lionessa
Keira, It didn't have to be "taught." It was all over the news every day for a year. You just needed to pay attention.

Keira
Montana Lady, I live in the US and I guessed. I was alive when this happened. However it was never taught to me. Just because we live the USA doesn’t mean it’s taught to us. Education is a privilege here

Giggle pig
NomadicFly, “destroyed”; uh huh😉
