brickmartian, yes! Phalaris had the guy make it for him and was disgusted by his explanation about how harmonious the screams sounded and he was the first one killed in it. I read that years ago. We were just in Italy and got to Verona and our tour guide said that we could go to the torture museums. He was amazed how the town had several!

This torture device was said to have been given the Greeks through a dream sent by the goddess Athena as a gift for them building a temple dedicated to her for worship! The man who "received" the dream was given permission to caste the bull, and if I remember the story correctly, he, himself became the first person to be put to death in it! I'm not very sure of that last bit, but that is one of the stories I have heard!
