What does the "E" stand for in 'E-85' Gasoline?
Correct answer: Ethanol
#NCFCAcompetitor
I only knew because at every gas pump ive been at it says may contain up to 10% ethanol
RyanKillsRobots
It's interesting that we call it gas in the USA because it's NOT a gas but a liquid. We really should be calling it petrol like almost everyone else.
BrawnyNarwhal27225
RyanKillsRobots, Good point, but gas is short for gasoline.

In ANY engine, big or small, the LEAST amount of ethonol is recommended. Never more than 10%. But if u want ur vehicle or lawnmower to last, there's always a pump somewhere that contains ZERO. It's gonna cost ya , but worth the extra!
Hahahanky
We always buy 93 Octane Rec or Recreation Fuel for generator, roto tiller, garden tractor, etc. Ethanol in fuel burns hotter and gums up/ toasts the engines. We also use in car when getting the rec fuel. Mechanics & small engine shops have told us many times to avoid ethanol. Of course, some vehicles are made esp for E85, and then best to use what mfg recommends 😎
Brock (+ sometimes Pamo)
RyanKillsRobots, it's shortened from "gasoline", nothing to do with being a gas

The Delorean needs to run on Ethanol instead of Plutonium then we can go Back To The Future with a Flex Capacitor- heh

RyanKillsRobots, but petrol is wrong. It isn't petroleum, but a distillate. We call it gas, not "a gas." It is short for "gasoline," and is therefore more correct than a shortening of "petroleum." It's only wrong if you incorrectly think we're calling it "A gas." What has happened to our education system???

E85 absolutely does not have 85% ethanol lol
Nutshell
Wow! This says that 68% of Americans who have flex-fuel fuel vehicles don't even know they own them, since they look and cost the same. So although flex-fuel is written on the vehicles the owners are never told what it means and fill them with unleaded anyhow and continue adding to the emissions problem & paying more than they need to at the pump.

RyanKillsRobots, I totally agree.

Player #1433182, Good info. I didn’t know that.

I'm happy I don't drink alcohol, wow E85, is in it., wow
leo
still costs so much more for ethanol
BooBoo
Contains up to 10% Ethanol
Nana
This was the best question I’ve ever had
Artie
Unless your vehicle is marked E85 do not use it or any mixture containing ethanol. In a conventional car just use gasoline
Shine
Thanks for sharing it was helpful.
lou
we always called it Ethol..our family owned a station.

Nutshell, sadly, this absolutely doesn't surprise me.

Oh G! I didn't know that

the water that can easily get into alcohol makes this fuel problematic for older cars

it's absolutely amazing that one word can cause so much controversy.
The info given in the comments on the use of ethanol was very informative. I had no idea it could ruin engines that weren't designed to use it.
Livory
RyanKillsRobots, I, personally, like pushaline, but petrol works. 😉
Player #119467252
i knew the answer but didn't know how to spell it
me
Player #1433182, ethanol only harms the carburetors on engines. Therefore if your engine is fuel ejected it will not harm it.
Macaroni
RyanKillsRobots, 🤣
DWR49
Forgot how to spell it.
Joseph
RyanKillsRobots, what fuels our cars is the combustion of the gas vapors not the gas itself, if the gas combusted the car would blow up
Tony
Brock (+ sometimes Pamo), Besides, in an internal combustion the liquid is vaporized and so it is a gas when ignited.
Cristiano Ronaldo
so much gas in the Philippiens we have
joey
RyanKillsRobots, wrong it's the gasoline fumes that ignite not the liquid so gas is correct
alchaser
Ethanol gums up engines and reduces fuel efficiency
Virl
There is ethanol at most gas stations
Suzi
I gave the correct answer and was ignored!!!
emmy
#NCFCAcompetitor, aint that right.
Billy
RyanKillsRobots, Gas[OLINE] sir. True "gas" should be called by what it is like oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen... etc.
