The usual name for a whip used for punishment was "the lash" The cat o' nine tails was a whip with multiple "tails" i.e. shorter extensions at the business end. Often with knots tied at the tips. In the Royal Navy during the 17th and 18th centuries, crimes on board like striking an officer or mutiny, were punishable by death or "flogging 'round the fleet" which would also be a death sentence. The unfortunate sailor would be taken on a longboat to all the ships of the fleet and given a certain number of lashes on each one, apparently this could be a many as 600 No one could survive that, truly barbaric.
