Sailors were traditionally buried at sea, however an exception was made for Admiral Nelson as the nation wanted to honour him. So his body was put in a barrel filled with spirits ( most probably rum) to preserve him all the way home from Trafalgar. A huge impressive carriage was made to carry his body through the streets of London to St Pauls, where he was buried.
