nimblemoon, I feel you. Drive-In movies were a great way for family members of different generations to bond. My parents used to take my siblings and I to the Black Horse Pike Drive-In (in NJ), and the 61st Street Drive-In (Philadelphia, PA). I really miss drive-in movie theaters.

OK, so he used an old 1928 projector but we were never given a clue as to what year he held the FIRST outdoor drive-in movie theater.

A lot easier for families who didn't need to keep their kids from runningb up and down theatre aisles. Some had playgrounds down front.
I lived ten minutes from the site of that first drive-in.

nimblemoon, there's still one operating in Tampa, FL; it's called Fun-Lan Drive-in, on E. Hillsborough Ave, and is a flea market and farmers market theoughout the week, as weekends are reserved for the drive-in features.

TheSocialMisanthrope, South Africa had drive-ins too, around late 1950s-1980s. I went several times with my parents, then later with them and my kids. Delightful on a balmy Durban summer's evening.

nimblemoon, We still have one in my town in upstate New York the same one we used to go to when we were kids back in the 70's. Of course they remodeled it, but it's in the same location with the same name.

Player #7106191, in my hometown the drive-in theater started charging by the number of people in the car. but kids are not that dumb, so all the passengers jammed into the trunk of the car and only the driver had to pay. it did not take very long for the drive-in theater to figure that one out and charge for the car or in some cases a pickup truck full of kids.
Mmmmm
Those were the good old days, wish we had them back. Traded drive-ins for malls! Booo
