What is the karat value for pure gold?

reclusivesavyigloo, actually pure gold exists on Earth, as this explains. Gold is very soft so other metals, like silver or copper are often mixed in to strengthen it for jewelry. The ratings mean how many units there are of gold in a piece out of every 24 metal units. So 24 karat means it's pure gold, 24 out of every 24 units are gold (24/24 is 100% gold). 22 karat means 22 of every 24 units are gold (22/24 is 88%), 18k means 18 of every 24 units are gold (18/24 is 79%)... and so forth. (I actually just inherited a gold mine, from my great-grandfather's claim here in Montana. I don't think there's anything there but it's one of those weird family things that just popped up in a will out of the blue. Fortunately the taxes on it are cheap!)

cherokeegrl1, they were used as a weight measure so they could work out the ratios. lf, for example they mixed 18 carob beans weight of gold with 6 carob weight of alloy they would have 18 karat gold.

The reason the Carab seed was used to measure in ancient times, is due to its uniformity. Carabiner seeds are identical in size shape and weight, making them ideal weights to compare with.
