I started smoking at 16. I went through cigarettes, cigars and a pipe. At the age of 45 I made a new year resolution to quit and never smoked again. My lovely wife was pleased that my clothes no longer smelled and neither did my breath.

SlyOne, The high price is almost certainly by design. In the US, the Congress is always looking to raise cigarette taxes. It gives them more money to waste, and makes it harder for people to keep buying them.

Andi, We did do it years ago--thirty years ago. Smoking had been banned in 96% of American hospitals by 1994.

Tanya, I used the gum to quit back in 1997. Even if you kept chewing the gum and didn't quit, it's much safer because it has no tar and fewer dangerous chemicals than cigarette smoke. You can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for reduced price gum. This is useful because the gum is as expensive as cigarettes.

My late husband had COPD from smoking almost his whole life. Very sad, and made everyone spend less time with him.

I'm so glad I was able to quit smoking. My son did for a while and I'm glad he quit too. Unfortunately for my husband he never quit and now has COPD and may have lung cancer too!

I do not see nearly as many people smoking today as twenty years ago, thank God.
