Soupçon actually comes from a French word whose primary meaning is suspicion and through semantic shift has taken on the meaning of "a very small amount" used in both modern English and French so next time you add a soupçon of something to your soup you are adding a "suspicion"

RegretfulHuman68, I hear ya...however I have actually heard of the word soupcon before, so I guess maybe it's just one of those rarely used words that it depends on what really old books you happen to have read.
