I believe Sandwich Islands is also a correct answer. Captain Cook named the Hawaiian Islands the Sandwich Islands the year before he died.

Laudy Miss Claudy, Because they did, until they were quickly disillusioned. Most mesoamerican and pacific peoples had folklore that incorporated fair skinned gods or ghosts. Imagine if you live in a culture that hasn't invented the wheel or sails and has that folklore then a European sailing ship turns up with overdressed white men riding on beasts 4x the size of your biggest llama and toting sticks that belch fire and death. Id be hedging my bets ,for a while at least.!
