Not "the last" but the only President of the USSR: this post was created in 1990 and ceased to exist in 1991

Special K, I read a story that on a trip to the US Gorbachev kept telling his driver to make random turns until he was way out in the country far beyond any point where things could be staged. He then went into a 7-11 store (with all his entourage following) and marvelled at the range and quality of products there . Far beyond anything the USSR could offer it’s people , and available to anyone who could afford them . He realised how badly the Soviets had failed their people . One little part of his moving forward. Whether or not it is true , it is an interesting thought

Gorbachev was a man ahead of his time. Thus fell the old Soviet Union. I think even he did not realize the full consequences.

He is sadly, now deceased. He would certainly be horrified to see what has happened to Russia now with Putin in charge. Sorrow for Ukraine, where I still have family. I recall a photo of him stooped down on a sidewalk to feed a 🐿 squirrel. He was a good man.

Shame Gorbachev isn’t in charge in Russia today I don’t think there would be the slightest chance of being at war with Ukraine,

ProsaicMedic2010, What peace? He is guilty in Black January in Baku in 1990. About 200 young and adult were killed, then the Armenians forced the people from their land and killed 300 turks in Armenia during his ruler. He did the same activity in Georgia, Latvia, Uzbekistan, Moldova too.

Player #25874027, very interesting story! I was actually scrolling down to comment on this. Believe it or not, I met Gorbachev when he spoke at a symposium my company was hosting in the early 2000s. For some insurance reason, we had to use employees to drive him and his entourage around and they asked me and two others on our team to do it. He was never in my car directly, but I did get to shake hands with him and get a photo together. I don't remember the random turn thing (I'm sure he had many trips where people drive him around), but it's possible.

Gorbachev was prompted by Ronald Reagan to make the change.
