The slogan was 'the milk chocolate melts in your mouth, not in your hand'. The coloring from the colored coating used to come off in my hand when I was young often.
Santa Claus
CakeYouSee, The slogan " Melts in the mouth, not in your hand" was from the Minstrels and, way tastier than M&M's.

there is an old-fashioned gumball machine in my front room that ALWAYS contains M&M's

Yum. One of my weaknesses. M and M's. Especially peanut M and M's. :)
Lioneyes
I read somewhere that the military was in need of a on the go sweet treat for their c-rations that would not melt and could endure long periods in a small pouch. Thus the idea to coat the chocolate 🍫

I live two miles from Hackettstown, NJ, where the M&M/Mars headquarters has been for ages. We find M&M varieties in our grocery and candy stores that cannot be found anywhere else, as the greater community is used as a test market.

Georgie, Hilarious homebodies.

Clo, yeah, that shell just puts me off. It's a shame, because the colours are cool, and the chocolate is good.
Clo
Denni, I find just the opposite, and yes I’m Canadian born.
Clo
Concorde SST, come to think of it, your right about that, after many years of M & M’s consumption, trying the smarties again in Canada, it did have a strange taste. I just thought it was sitting on the store shelf too long!
Clo
Luis Pedro, My dad had a friend who worked for the Mars chocolate factory in Switzerland, whenever he would visit he would bring a bunch of different chocolates!
Clo
Jackie, Smarties are great too, tried to find them in the U.S. but the U.S. “smarties” are those pressed, colored sugar things with pastel colors that come in a roll. Was very disappointed. But M & M’s are great too, especially the caramel filled ones!
Clo
Lioneyes, do they still have M & M’s in the MREs (meals ready to eat)?
Clo
Player #10702960, my favourite are the caramel filled ones which I’ve yet to find in Europe.
George
CakeYouSee, yes, but the chocolate never did! 😂 That was their point!

I love M&M's, they are always yummy. They are better than Smarties, which have a very artificial tasting candy shell, maybe food colouring overload.
This coming from a Canadian is rare, but I've really tried to like Smarties, with a lot of "trials" as I've grown older. Just can't get past that strange shell.
Meg
Georgie, just m & m s

Love M&M's...especially peanut and almond, original are good too. And a couple of the new varieties are pretty dang good too, e.g. hazelnut cream, and pretzel.
