I'm 69 years old and the first time I read Tolkien's Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings I was 16. even with several movies to watch I still reread them every 5 or six years. Tolkien, Heinlein, and Asimov were my favorite authors. Stranger in a Strange Land is another reread for me.
Radakyl
Peter Jackson did a good job on the movies!

72jacobite, I read all but the Silmarillion when I was ten. They aren't that hard to read, especially the Hobbit.
ZED
OpheliaDoomed, the Silmarillion wasn’t actually published until 1977 - posthumously by his son. Although it is, technically, Tolkien’s first (and last book) and precedes the Hobbit in the timeline...it is not considered a ‘prequel’ to the Hobbit. It sets the foundation of the legends referred to in LOTR and the Hobbit - although it is a totally frightful bore to read.

Player #3662806, Oh, you lucky kids! I LOVED when our teachers read to us, and because of that I read to our kids, and they learned to love reading too.

not really a prequel if the book came out before lord of the ring. isn't prequel supposed to mean set before (which is the case) bu publishes After? (not the case)
Mari

I think it was so lame that they stretched that little book into three long movies. It’s all about making money 💰.
Libro
I think it must be silmarillion because all settings start with it.

Is The Silmarillion a prequel to Lord of the Rings?
However, he later did publish The Silmarillion after his success with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Though published after both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, this is a prequel to both stories.
K
This is incorrect! The actual prequel is the Silmarillion. It is known as the “dictionary” to all of the books written by Tolkien.

I feel compelled to note that The Hobbit isn't technically a prequel. A prequel typically refers to a work published later, which references am earlier time. The Hobbit was written first. :)

ZED, I tried to read Silmarillion years ago after reading The Hobbit and LOTR and could NOT get into it. I was very disappointed. Thank you for your comment about being boring! I feel better after all these years. I thought I was missing something 😕
