The Jedi philosophy was based largely on Taoism. George Lucas read and spoke with Joseph Campbell a lot before and during the filming of the first trilogy. The book, The Power of Myth is transcripts of Campbell's conversations with Bill Moyer. There is a show that was on PBS in the late 1980s. Fascinating.

Good few years ago the UK census form had Jedi as the answer for religious belief and it easily passed the mark required to be acknowledged by the government. it makes more sense or at least as much sense as other major religions, magic sky wizard with robes, or magic space wizards with laser swords... gotta go with the laser swords.
